World Bank dishes out $346 million for development projects in Chad

The World Bank Group approved through the International Development Association (IDA), its institution dedicated to poor countries, a total funding of $ 346 million for two development projects aimed at building resilience and means subsistence in the region of Lake Chad, on the border of four countries, namely: Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria and Chad.

The first so-called project for the revival and development of the Lake Chad region (PROLAC) in the amount of $ 170 million has the main objectives of supporting national and regional coordination platforms and local capacity building, helping to restoring sustainable rural mobility and consolidating the resumption of remunerative agricultural activities in certain provinces of Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

The multi-sectoral project to end the crisis in north-eastern Nigeria (MCRP) has obtained funding of $ 176 million to help the authorities improve access to basic services and economic outlets for communities affected by the crisis. crisis in the northeastern states of the country (Adamawa, Borno and Yobe) while strengthening coordination between them and the other states of the country, bordering Lake Chad. Complementing an ongoing operation with $ 200 million, the project is focusing on livelihoods and investments in the agricultural sector.

According to the World Bank, the Lake Chad region is suffering from a lack of infrastructure, poor access to basic services and the severe impact of climate change on natural resources and livelihoods. This region displays economic and development indicators below the average level of the riparian countries. In addition, the prevailing insecurity since 2009, fueled by rebel groups that prevent more than 49 million people from earning a living by fishing, farming or farming, further aggravates the situation.
