Chad and World Bank reach a deal to develop Lake Chad

The Chadian Ministry of Economy and Development Planning and the World Bank signed a grant agreement for the Lake Chad Province Recovery and Planning Project (PROLAC). The deal sealed on June 9, 2020 is evaluated at 27 billion FCFA.

Forty-five million US dollars, approximately 27 billion CFA francs, is the amount of this donation agreement initialled by Issa Doubragne, Chad’s Minister of Economy and Development Planning and François NANKOBOGO, representative of the World Bank in Chad.

This amount is intended for PROLAC which works for the recovery of the Lake Chad region. It supports regional coordination and crisis monitoring, connectivity and agricultural livelihoods in the targeted provinces of Cameroon, Niger, Nigeria and Chad.

Justifying the importance of this donation, Issa Doubragne explains that “the Lake Chad region is part of the areas of Africa where there is insecurity orchestrated by unrelenting violence in the basin which has caused a disturbance in the social fabric and the destruction of resources of traditional subsistence, displacement of populations and an astonishing human toll ”.

For his interlocutor of the day, PROLAC is the result of an observation made by several studies which expose problems such as the lack of infrastructure, poor access to basic services or the impact of climate change on natural resources and people’s livelihoods.

François NANKOBOGO also explains that PROLAC “is part of the World Bank’s regional integration strategy” and reconfirms the latter’s commitment “to maintain support for priority areas in Lake Chad, in accordance with the commitments of IDA19 and the World Bank Group’s FCV (Countries fragile to violence and conflict) strategy adopted in February 2020 ”.

It should be noted that this donation is aimed at the beneficiaries of the project who are young people at risk and women from countries bordering Lake Chad.
