Gabon recording electricity deficits despite potentials

Gabon produced 1,103.5 GWh of electricity from hydropower plants in 2018, according to a report by MarketInsightsReport, a specialist market research provider based in North Carolina. Insufficient production since that year the country had to import 403 GWh of electricity from foreign grid lines to meet its electricity needs.

Ali Bongo’s country is struggling to meet its electricity needs. This is one of the information contained in the “Study Report of the Global Energy Market in Gabon for the Period 2020-2025”, published in October by MarketInsightsReport, a market research provider based in North Carolina. North, United States.

According to the report, “Hydroelectricity is one of the main sources of electricity in Gabon. In 2018, the country produced 1,103.5 GWh of electricity from hydropower plants. However, the country is still dependent on imported electricity and in 2018 it imported 403 GWh of electricity from foreign grid lines to meet its electricity needs. “

MarketInsightsReport also argues that “Gabon is one of the richest countries in Central Africa, where urban electrification reached over 97% in 2019. However, access to electricity in rural areas is still low compared to urban areas ”. Faced with growing demand for electricity, the Energy Ministry plans to increase hydropower production capacity in the coming years, to make Gabon self-sufficient and reduce electricity imports.

Several projects are thus planned for this purpose. These include the construction of the Ngoulmendjim (73 MW) and Dibwangui (15 MW) hydropower plants, financed by the African Development Bank (Bad) and the GPC-Eranove consortium. These projects should thus cover the electricity market in Gabon, and should register a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 3.4% over the period 2020-2025.
