Ali Bongo receives ECCAS envoy as Summit draws near

The President of the Republic, Ali Bongo Ondimba, received in audience, on July 24, the Secretary General of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Ambassador Ahmad Allam-Mi. Preparations for the next summit of ECCAS Heads of State and Government were on the agenda.

The current President of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Ali Bongo Ondimba, and the Secretary-General of ECCAS, Ahmad Allam-Mi, had a head-to-head on July 24. The head of the sub-regional institution briefed Ali Bongo on the preparations for the conference of heads of state and government, scheduled for July 30, 2020, in Libreville.

If the key articulations of this high-level meeting remain unknown for the moment, the stake will be to take stock of the “historic” reform, adopted last December at an extraordinary summit organized in Libreville, which significantly modifies the institutional architecture of ECCAS.

“Faced with major and unprecedented challenges, such as the health response against Covid-19, as well as the economic recovery and the revitalization of growth in order to stimulate employment, a strong collective response, in particular at the level of the region (…), is necessary. This is why the historic reform of the ECCAS institutions, adopted last December in Libreville, is essential.

It will allow better coordination between the Member States in the deployment of certain public policies, and therefore greater efficiency and more solidarity ”, declared Ali Bongo. The Gabonese president assures us that it is his duty, as the current president of ECCAS, to “do everything to ensure the effective implementation and at a good pace of this reform whose great beneficiaries will be the peoples of Africa. central ”.

Another issue of the July 30 summit, the establishment of the Commission, established to make the sub-regional organization more dynamic, in place of the General Secretariat. In this new perspective, six positions will have to be filled within this new architecture. The shortlisted candidates will be validated at this summit of heads of state and government.
