UNDP encourages Gabon to promote Digital Economy

Among the topics discussed during the recent exchange between Oligui Nguema and Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, the need for Gabon to develop its digital ecosystem, which provides jobs and creates wealth, figured prominently. The UN organization is ready to support the country in this regard.

Present in New York as part of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema met on Saturday, September 21 with Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). While their exchange comes a few days after the signing of a financing agreement relating to the establishment, in Gabon, of the Emergency Community Development Program (PUDC), it is also on the subject of economic diversification that the two men and their collaborators spoke. The UN organization says it is interested in this ambition shared by the new authorities and their predecessors. The objective is to end dependence on natural resources.

While saying it is ready to provide its support and assistance to the country, the UNDP is proposing to explore other resources, more current and just as job-creating and wealth-creating. “With the transitional president, we discussed economic change and the strategy for a country like Gabon, with extraordinary resources, but also with opportunities in new technologies. Digital technology, for example, is one of the elements I discussed with the president, because the UNDP is today engaged alongside more than 120 countries in the development of digital ecosystem (development) strategies. I am convinced that we could work together in the coming years ,” Achim Steiner told the press at the end of his meeting with the head of the Gabonese delegation in New York.

This meeting between the Head of State and the German diplomat, an expert in environmental policies, was also an opportunity to address issues related to the preservation of the environment, reports the Presidential Communication. “The role of the UNDP as well as cooperation between Gabon and the said institution were also the subject of discussions between the President of the Republic and his host ,” they added at the Palace.
