Gabon’s Rubber industry in good shape in Q1 of 2020 despite drop in exports and workforce

The rubber industry in Gabon fared well in the first quarter of 2020, according to figures from the Directorate General of Economy and Tax Policy. In its sectoral outlook note, the Ministry of Economy and Finance indicates appreciable results at the end of March 2020: a production of more than 3% for humic rubber and 14% for machined rubber.

Assessing the performance of the rubber production sector for the first quarter of 2020 in Gabon, the Ministry of Economy and Finance, through its sectoral outlook note published by the Directorate General of Economy and Tax Policy, reports to good performance.

According to the report, production has improved for both wet rubber (+ 31%) and machined rubber (+ 14%), thanks to the gradual start-up of OlamRubber’s plantations in Bitam.

Exports of rubber, however, fell 17.5% to 2,609 tonnes, due to the unfavourable global context, which led to a 2.7% decline in turnover to 15 2.3 billion CFA francs.

In terms of employment, the workforce decreased by 13.1% to 1,076 agents, for a payroll of 887 million CFA francs, down 12% compared to the end of March 2019.
