Gabon’s Energy Taskforce pledges to strengthen Gaz sector

The Gabon Gas Strategy Task Force launched its work on March 24 in Libreville. Composed of oil companies and the administration in particular, this work unit, which is part of the Transformation Acceleration Plan (PAT), aims to find ways and means to bring about the emergence of a gas industry in the country. .

As part of the implementation of the Transformation Acceleration Plan (PAT), Gabon aims to structure its gas sector. To this end, the Task Force dedicated to this ambition, led by the Ministry of Petroleum, was set up on March 24 in Libreville. “The purpose of today’s meeting was to launch this Task Force with the membership. We have selected as members of the upstream oil companies, the Directorates-General for Energy, the Environment and the Climate Council “, explained the project leader of the Task Force on gas strategy.

“The idea was to present to all stakeholders the objectives of our Task Force, which is to combine several sources of supply with several outlets such as electrification, petrochemicals, and mobility. It is important to note that in the Gabonese Republic we have enough gas resources to be able to supply the local market. However, as it stands, the problem is that 80% of the butane we consume in our homes is imported. In the meantime, this resource is present in Gabon, ”added Yan Yangari

The Task Force aims to be inclusive because it is a question of setting up a partnership between the private sector, the Gabonese administrations and international donors with a view to the development of Gabon’s gas strategy. This includes three catalyst projects with improving the supply of the domestic market with butane gas, a 25% reduction in butane imports by 2020 and the liquefaction of 70,000 m3 / day of gas currently flared for sale to local manufacturers. “It is important that our gas strategy reflects Gabon’s ambition to achieve an energy transition from diesel to gas,” Yan Yangari insisted.

The launch of the work of the Task Force paves the way for a long process. “In the next 40 days, we will be working with the various oil companies, understanding what they want to do, learning about their ambitions on the gas resource in order to prepare a workshop; a very technical working session on the different themes: how to reduce gas flaring? How to secure gas developments? How to reduce counterparty risk? Etc. ”, confided the project manager of the Gas Strategy Task Force.
