Gabon Takes Steps to Enhance Control Over Forest Product Export: Ministry Launches Training Workshop

In order to improve the effectiveness of controls on wood production and the export of processed forest products, the Ministry of Water and Forests launched this Monday, April 15, a training workshop on the identification of transformed forest species by-products. . Organized with the support of ATIBT until May 4, this workshop aims to strengthen the technical capacities of Water and Forestry agents and the general customs directorate.

n Libreville, the Minister of Water and Forests, General Maurice Ntossui Allogo, launched a training workshop on the identification of forest species in processed products (sawning, veneer, etc.) this Monday, April 15, 2024. Organized jointly with the assistance of the International Technical Association of Tropical Timber (ATIBT) and the National School of Water and Forests (ENEF), this training takes place until May 4 at the forest products control brigade of Owendo.

“ During these three weeks, we will develop new skills which will truly make it possible to perpetuate the training acquired on the one hand, and to contribute effectively to the development of the forestry sector as advocated by the highest authorities of our country ,” declared General Maurice Ntossui Allogo. 

This training workshop aims to strengthen the technical capacities of 57 water and forestry agents and 30 agents from the general directorate of customs. This is to improve the effectiveness of controls on wood production and the export of processed forest products. “ It is part of the implementation of the Debt Conversion Agreement, signed by France and Gabon in 2008 and whose funds are reserved for the financing of projects contributing to the sustainable management of Gabonese forest ecosystems », indicated the member of the government.

Created in 1951, ATIBT’s mission is to ensure the promotion and development of a sustainable, ethical and legal tropical timber sector as a renewable and essential raw material for the socio-economic development of producing countries.
