French Development Agency coughs out 3.2 billion FCFA to help Gabon fight covid-19

The French Development Agency (AFD) has just mobilized more than 3.2 billion francs to help Gabon in its fight against the Coronavirus. These funds are part of the Health Sector Support Project, phase 2,  implemented in the country.

In order to support the Gabonese authorities in responding to the spread of the Coronavirus on the national territory, the French Development Agency (AFD) has released the checkbook. The public financial institution has just carried out the partial reallocation of funds from a project underway in the health sector, amounting to more than 3.2 billion CFA francs.

In a post on its Facebook page, on April 20, the French Embassy in Gabon specifies that the Health Sector Support Project, phase 2, includes equipment allowing the simultaneous treatment of 60 patients in intensive care; the training of 55 resuscitation doctors and around 100 paramedics working in emergency and resuscitation services or in the operating room.

The project also includes assistance in setting up an operational emergency center, in order to promote coordination between the various health services involved in the fight against the epidemic; an awareness and communication strategy around prevention to reach the most isolated populations in Gabon.

Implemented by French military aid workers, Phase 2 is funded by AFD and the Gabonese government. “This cooperation, which started on April 13, 2020, responds to the urgency of the fight against the epidemic. It also participates in the duty of solidarity between nations faced with the pandemic for the benefit in particular of the African continent, as the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron recently pleaded, ” the French Embassy in Gabon responded.
