The United Nations to accompany Congo to counter COVID 19 economic shocks

The resident representative of the United Nations system in Congo (UNS), Chris Mburu, handed over to the Minister in charge of the Economy, Gilbert Ondongo, on September 8 in Brazzaville, the plan to mitigate and correct the socioeconomic impacts linked to the coronavirus pandemic in Congo.

Developed by the United Nations system (UNS), the plan to mitigate and correct the socioeconomic impacts linked to the coronavirus pandemic in Congo assesses the socioeconomic impacts of covid-19 and the UNS recovery plan will make it possible to reduce the socioeconomic impacts linked to the coronavirus pandemic in Congo. The UN resident coordinator Chris Mburu said the recovery plan supports government efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic.

“Through this plan, the UNS renews its commitment to be a key partner of the government, capable of federating strategic partnerships for an inclusive and sustainable response to the current crisis, more generally to the challenges of socio-economic development of the Congo”, Chris Mburu says.

Estimated at more than two billion US dollars, the SNU recovery plan is an immediate socio-economic response to Covid-19. It focuses on five major pillars, namely the priority of health, protection of populations, economic response and recovery, macroeconomic measures and multilateral collaboration, as well as cohesion and resilience of populations.

“By focusing on the 5 pillars, the areas of intervention proposed in the response plan of the United Nations system constitute a solid basis for strengthening support to the government in the implementation of short and medium-term actions, for an inclusive response to the socio-economic crisis caused by Covid-19, ”said Maleye Diop, representative of the United Nations Development Program in Congo (UNDP).

For him, faced with the precarious situation caused by the coronavirus pandemic, it was necessary to assess the extent of the impact of this pandemic on the socio-economic sector in order to assess the evolution of the vulnerability of the Congolese population.

For his part, the Minister in charge of the Economy reassured that the recommendations made in this report will be taken into account as part of the development of the recovery plan, followed by the stabilization plan.
