Gabon’s public debt: 648.0 billion FCFA settled in the Q1 of 2020

Gabonese public debt in the first quarter of 2020 was characterized by a sharp increase in payments, established at 648.0 billion CFA francs against 143.6 billion CFA francs in the 1st quarter of 2019 for a variation of 351.2%.

At the end of the first quarter of the fiscal year 2020, the public debt situation was characterized by a sharp increase in payments, established at 648.0 billion CFA francs against 143.6 billion in the first quarter of 2019. The settlement of the external debt (88% of payments) was made to the tune of 570.1 billion CFA francs in the 1st quarter of 2020 against 116.9 billion CFA francs in the same period in 2019. The payments mainly related to the debt of the international financial markets (75.6% of the shares) amounting to 490 billion CFA francs in the 1st quarter of 2020. The multilateral debt was paid for 35.2 billion CFA francs, the bilateral one for 21.1 billion and commercial for 23.9 billion CFA francs.

These regulations include the payment of arrears of 554.1 million CFA francs, of which 533.8 million CFA francs for the benefit of commercial creditors, 18.7 million CFA francs for bilateral payments and 1.55 million from multilateral.

Concerning the payment of the domestic debt at the end of March 2020, it amounted to 77.9 billion CFA francs against 26.6 billion CFA francs in 2019. The debt on the regional financial market was paid up to of 42.7 billion CFA francs, banking of 20.2 billion CFA francs and the moratorium of 15 billion CFA francs.

According to the sectoral outlook note from the general direction of the economy and fiscal policy, the efforts to settle this public debt confirm the strategy adopted by the government, which consists in anticipating the settlement of certain debts, by lifting the financial market funds.
