Gabon open to international funding for hydropower

The Minister of Forestry prefers international funding to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to develop hydropower in Gabon. Such funding is “a much better way forward,” said Lee White.

What would be the appropriate financing route to develop hydroelectric power in Gabon? The Minister of Forests prefers international funding. “Gabon, despite its already negative emissions (greenhouse gas, editor’s note), is also considering measures such as the supply of hydroelectric power, but it needs international funding to build this”, recently confided Lee White to Reuters, in a feature dealing with reducing greenhouse gases in Africa.

For him, such funding is “a much better way forward”, rather than asking for help from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), a new global fund created to support the efforts of developing countries and countries. respond to the challenge of climate change. In other words, the GCF helps developing countries limit or reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change.

From Lee White’s point of view, hydropower should thus consolidate Gabon’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gases. However, some studies have shown that hydroelectric dams emit a lot of greenhouse gases during their operation and beyond. Between 15% and 17% of dams in the world thus have higher emissions per unit of energy produced than a coal-fired power plant after 20 years.
