Chadian businessmen reject new taxes

Chadian importers and customs have been at odds for two weeks. To protest against the new sub-regional customs requirements, importers refuse to clear their goods at all border posts in the country.

According to a customs source, the new requirements prompt importers to comply with the new CEMAC rules. But for importers, these rules suffocate their activities. “A container of biscuits, in the meantime, to be cleared through customs at 4 million FCFA, nowadays it is around 16 million FCFA. This situation is unacceptable, ”denounces an importing trader.

On this morning of November 21, 2020, the customs court of Ngueli, on the border of the neighboring Cameroonian town of Kousseri, is filled with trucks loaded with various goods, the engine off. All around, drivers and other apprentices spend their time in the shade of the desks playing ludo.

“We are killing time with this game; while waiting for the situation to be settled, ”breathes an apprentice. On the freight forwarder side, it is said that with the current tariff, it is almost impossible for importers to declare their goods.

“We are intermediaries between customs services and traders. Traders simply refused to declare their imported goods because of new tariffs set by customs. They cannot import their goods at a loss, ”observes a freight forwarder.

Already, consumers fear speculation on imported products. “If this situation continues, the prices of imported products will be revised upwards by traders,” worries one consumer. In some markets in the capital, the prices of imported items are starting to rise. consumers report that the three units of spaghetti, which usually sell for 1,000 FCFA, buy for 1,500 FCFA, or 500 FCFA per unit.
