Equatorial Guinea strengthens internet connectivity to curb Covid-19

The agency incharge of the management of Telecommunication Infrastructure GITGE plans to strengthens internet connectivity in the country, a move intended to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Provision has been made to grant an Internet speed of 100 Mbps to the research laboratory of the Institute of Investigations in Public Health, in the district of Baney located in the province of Bioko Norte, composed of a clinical hospital and a reference laboratory; and at the Sampaka hospital.

These two institutions play a fundamental role in the fight against the disease. The enhanced data capacity will also greatly facilitate the communication actions of the Technical Committee for surveillance and response to the new coronavirus.

GITGE will also increase mobile Internet capacity by 30% and by 100% for the fixed connection. The objective is to allow the populations to continue to exchange with friends and family, to study and to work during the restrictive period designed by authorities.

In its 2019 policy note on Regional Infrastructure and Connectivity in Africa, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) states that “the increasing connectivity and rapid expansion of digital technologies, such as digital financial services , e-government, cloud computing solutions and e-commerce platforms, create many opportunities for businesses and provide life-changing experiences for individuals”.
