Elimination of roaming charges planned from January 2021 in the CEMAC sub region

From January 1, 2021 citizens of member countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC) traveling within the sub-region will have access to mobile services, including calls, SMS and internet, without changing Sim card and additional costs.

The six-member countries of CEMAC have agreed on a legal framework aimed at reducing the cost of communication. A draft community regulation on roaming and tariffs on communication networks with a view to setting up a single network in Central Africa has already emerged. The cost of communication will drop significantly in the coming months with the elimination of roaming.

To give a boost to the integration process, CEMAC also intends to rely on telecommunications. “It would be wise for CEMAC member states not to miss the deadline of January 1, 2021 for the operationalization of the elimination of additional costs on mobile roaming. This is to boost the efforts for an economic recovery in the sub-region in a post-COVID-19 world, “a press release from CEMAC indicated.

Indeed, the draft community regulation relating to roaming and tariffs on communication networks has been validated by the telecoms ministers, in accordance with the wishes expressed by the heads of state of the sub-region. There is now talk of the sub-regional office for Central Africa of the Economic Commission for Africa overseeing the implementation of this inclusive project.

The elimination of roaming charges will be beneficial both in terms of productivity, the diversification of services, and in terms of increasing the volume of intra-African trade. “This decisive step constitutes a borderless communication tool and a vector of regional integration likely to significantly improve the daily life of citizens on the move in the Cémac zone and, consequently, an opportunity to strengthen the free movement of people, property and capital, “we learned from the same source.

It should be noted that the new community regulations removing roaming charges on mobile communication networks open to the public were approved at the end of February, in Douala, by the ministers in charge of Telecommunications, in connection with the 2017 Regional Economic Program. 2021.
