Covid 19: Severe test in prospect for the payment of salaries of civil servants in Cameroon

The payment of the salaries of Cameroonian civil servants will be an uphill task for banks this month. This is due to the scare of Covid 19 whose curve is geometrically progressing at a disturbing rate in the Central African country.

Cameroon presently has 70 infected victims of Covid 19 with one death according to information from the Ministry of Public Health. So far, 13 measures rolled out by the government to mitigate and curb the pandemic are being flouted with impunity by the population from a vast majority of Cameroon.

In a bid to flatten the infection curve, the Ministry of Finance has laid out strict modalities to be applied by banks to avoid any contamination of the coronavirus. In a service note signed on March 24, the Minister of Finance, Louis Paul Motaze “invites all banks and public accountants to scrupulously ensure compliance with government directives inherent in the fight against the spread of coronavirus”, during payment operations of this month’s  salaries available on Wednesday March 25.

The banks are invited to multiply the cash registers, to enforce social distancing measures of at least one meter in the queues inside the agencies and in front of the ATMs. They must also prevent gatherings of more than fifty people in their precincts.

Provision of alcohol-based solutions and provision of water points to allow users to wash their hands are other directives from the Finance Ministry.

Failure by clients to comply with these rules will be met with punishment by law enforcement instruments. Banks in Cameroon like other countries are busy spots, with great potentials for the transmission of the deadly Covid 19. Authorities have called on the population to remain vigilant and respect all guidelines in order to flatten the disturbing infection curve.
