Chad seals 54 billion FCFA accord to improve electricity supply

The Minister of Economy and Development Planning and the representative of the World Bank in Chad signed this Monday, June 29, a financing agreement for the regional Cameroon-Chad interconnection project.

This regional project will make it possible to exchange energy with the transfer of hydraulic energy from Cameroon to Chad. Hosted by the Swedd project (Empowerment of women and the demographic dividend in the Shel), it will also decrease the more expensive local production in order to optimize the development of the electricity sector of the two countries.

The electrical interconnection project is structured around two components: the first concerns the interconnection of the electrical networks of Cameroon and Chad and the second is located on rural electrification along the corridors of the transmission lines.

According to the Minister of Economy and Development Planning, Issa Doubragne, the Cameroon-Chad interconnection line is one of the flagship projects selected in the energy master plan of the CEMAC member states (Economic and Monetary Community of Central African States).

It is one of the most important infrastructures to achieve energy exchanges within this space. At the same time, he urged his colleague from Oil and Energy to initiate similar energy projects because development and energy go hand in hand.

According to the World Bank representative in Chad, Jean Bosco Nankobogo, the lack of energy is the most important brake factor in achieving national development aspirations. This is why it was decided to develop an ambitious support program for the sector with a specific objective of accelerating the increase in the rate of access to electricity.

The Minister in charge of Energy, Mahamat Hamid Koua, thanked the various actors of this financing agreement, this project will not only give him a new breath to his department but will allow Chad to be able to sell solar energy in the subregion because it is the sunniest country.
