Cameroonian youth develops application that can list cases of Coronavirus found in each city of the country

Franklin Nguegang, 28, uses information published on the Twitter account of the Minister of Public Health, Dr Manaouda Malachie to showcase Covid-19 infection trends in Cameroon. “The application allows you to view an interactive map of Cameroon on which are listed the different cases found of the disease and this by city, to display graphs showing the rate of infected by city as well as new cases of the last days”, he explains.

To do this work, the computer development engineer says he uses the information published on the twitter account of the Minister of Public Health, Dr Malachie Manaouda and the WHO website.

He reveals, “I focused mainly and not only on the Minister’s Twitter account because, since the start of Covid-19 in Cameroon, the Minister’s account was the one that most quickly provided the additional detailed data … but this only provides information on Cameroon. However, for my application I need at least the new cases and the cities concerned, in order to be able to generate more useful results and place them geographically on a map, so that this data is more useful to any user.”

Information published in the local press is also a source of inspiration. “Thus, we have a follow-up of new cases, the rate of daily progression of the disease, statistics of increase in cases …”.

Thanks to this application, he maintains, “all Cameroonians as well as the Cameroonian state will have an overview of the monitoring of Covid-19”.

If the information is accessible to all around the world, he specifies that the application is aimed above all for “Cameroonians living in Cameroon so that even being in confinement, they can have all the data on the disease around them.

“They should have all the old data and in addition to follow the info on the disease day by day, have all the information during its existence in the country … It also aims to help the Cameroonian State to have all the data of the evolution of the disease from the first day until the end and provide it to the people, thus allowing them to focus on fighting this disease. The site also allows the Cameroonian diaspora to be able to follow the evolution of the disease in the country.”
