BEAC prescribes electronic payment mechanisms to curb spread of covid-19

The Bank of Central African States BEAC is very concerned about the well-being of the populations of the member countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa CEMAC, in this period of global health crisis due to the Covid 19  pandemic. It fears that the spread of the virus will be more significant through the currency, and for this reason, has formulated some recommendations aimed at combating at best the risk of contamination through the banking system of the sub-region.

The Governor of the BEAC, Abbas Mahamat Tolli, signed this Wednesday, April 15, 2020, a press release urging the population and operators, to favor the use of digital payments, in this case electronic payments and payments by menu.

On March 27, 2020 the Monetary Policy Committee of the bank met and invited payment service providers to lower the costs of electronic money and digital payment transactions in CEMAC.

BEAC says it has visibly set up mechanisms to strengthen remote banking operations, and specifies that bank cards, mobiles and other electronic payment instruments are now interoperable.

Clearly, it will now be possible for a customer of a bank X, holder of a card acquired in his bank, to carry out operations in a bank Y, by means of an exchange of transactional data between the two structures X and Y. Also, mobile, intra and inter operator payments can also be used.
