After Cameroon Government eases restrictive measures, GICAM calls on the state to do more

The Cameroon Employers Asociation known in its French acronym as GICAM notes that its proposals have been partially taken into account by the government, and invites the authorities to make more efforts to help businesses restore their financial health.

GICAM  had specifically called for government support measures to help companies cope with the devastating effects of the Coronavirus pandemic. This cry for help  was heard, and on April 30, the Prime Minister Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute, made public about twenty easing measures, aimed at limiting the horrors of the economic disaster orchestrated by COVID- 19.

The employers cartel has taken note of this decision of the authorities, which they welcome in passing, but are not completely satisfied, even if they note that their proposals have been partially taken into account. GICAM welcomes the clearance of the balance of the VAT credit to help restore businesses’ cash, but deplores “the absence of customs measures, repayment of domestic debt and the non-mobilization of bank levers”, as we read in a press release made public this Monday, May 4, 2020 by Célestin Tawamba, the President of GICAM.

The organization also spelt out that government easing measures have no noticeable impact on the economy, and moreover, households are yet to feel their effects.

“The absence of structural measures aimed not only at supporting the treasury of companies, all of which are sufficiently or hard hit, but also at reviving business activities and the economy, remains for GICAM a subject of great concern”. Employers therefore continue their advocacy by inviting the government to go further in the implementation of additional measures to help businesses go up the slope.
