Eye Haïdara: Taking Center Stage at Cannes 2026

The Cannes Film Festival has chosen its grand ambassador for the 79th edition. The 43-year-old French-Malian actress Eye Haïdara will preside over the opening and closing ceremonies of the world’s most prestigious cinema event, running from May 12 to 23, 2026

Plural Roots and a Theatrical Foundation

Born on March 7, 1983, in Boulogne-Billancourt to Malian parents (with her father also having Moroccan heritage), Haïdara grew up navigating between Paris and Bamako. Her acting vocation was first sparked by a primary school teacher who recognized her natural stage presence.

She built her craft on a rigorous academic and theatrical foundation:

  • Academic Training: After earning a theater-focused baccalauréat in 2001, she completed a university degree (DEUG) in Performing Arts at the Sorbonne Nouvelle in 2003.
  • The Stage: She trained at Acting International under Robert Cordier and later joined the Académie Internationale de Théâtre de Lorient. A major early milestone was performing in Christophe Honoré’s play La Faculté at the 2012 Avignon Festival.

An Expanding Career: From the Shadows to the Spotlight

Haïdara’s on-screen career is marked by steady growth, moving from independent cinema to mainstream success and international streaming.

  • The Early Years (2007–2016): She made her cinematic debut in Audrey Estrougo’s Regarde-moi (2007) and briefly appeared in Jean-Luc Godard’s Film Socialisme (2008). During this period, she patiently honed her skills in supporting roles and short films.
  • The National Breakthrough (2017): Her career skyrocketed when directors Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache cast her as the energetic Adèle in Le Sens de la fête (C’est la vie!), starring alongside Jean-Pierre Bacri. Her magnetic performance earned her a 2018 César nomination for Most Promising Actress and a Prix Lumière nomination.
  • A Prolific Leading Figure (2018–Present): Following her breakthrough, she became a familiar face in French cinema, working with renowned directors like Cédric Klapisch (Deux moi, 2019) and Michel Hazanavicius (Le Prince oublié, 2020). She delivered critically acclaimed performances in the Arte series En Thérapie (Season 2, 2022) and the comedy Les Femmes du square (2022). Recently, she expanded her reach to global audiences with the action-packed Netflix series Furies (2024).

“Cinema was revealed to me by Euzhan Palcy’s ‘Sugar Cane Alley’ (Rue Cases-Nègres). This story of a young West Indian boy and his grandmother’s sacrifice deeply moved me.” — Eye Haïdara

An Active Voice for Change

Beyond her acting, Haïdara uses her platform to advocate for a more inclusive industry:

  • Combating Stereotypes: In 2018, she co-authored the collective essay Noire n’est pas mon métier (Black is Not My Profession) to denounce discrimination in French cinema.
  • Advocating for Parity: During the 2023 César Awards, she delivered a powerful speech paying tribute to forgotten female directors.
  • Women’s Rights: She is an active supporter of the #MaintenantOnAgit movement led by the Fondation des Femmes.

Cannes 2026: A Historic Consecration

Announced on March 25, 2026, by France Télévisions and Brut, her appointment as Mistress of Ceremonies places her in the lineage of icons like Virginie Efira and Camille Cottin, succeeding Laurent Lafitte. For an artist with West African and Mediterranean roots, this role is highly symbolic, embodying cinema’s power to bridge cultures.

The 79th Cannes Film Festival at a Glance:

  • Dates: May 12–23, 2026, on the Croisette.
  • Jury President: South Korean director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy).
  • Honorary Palmes d’Or: Peter Jackson (Opening) & Barbra Streisand (Closing).

When Eye Haïdara walks the steps of the Palais des Festivals on May 12, 2026, it will be the ultimate celebration of an artist whose talent, tenacity, and activism have rightfully earned her the spotlight.
