SNH open talks with Russian and British gas giants to scale up production in Cameroon

Cameroon-Cameroon’s National Hydrocarbons Corp., or SNH, and its partner Perenco Cameroon have started talks with Russia’s Gazprom and Britain’s Golar to increase production of liquefied natural gas.

LNG production is currently carried out via the Hilli Episeyo vessel stationed offshore of Cameroon’s coastal town of Kribi, with the contract running from 2018 through 2026.

State-run SNH said Wednesday that it is negotiating for Hilli Episeyo to remain in Cameroon beyond the initial deal, in order to exploit gas from the Rio Del Rey in southwestern Cameroon.

The floating LNG terminal will be owned and operated by Golar  which is converting one of its LNG tankers into a floating production unit, Reuters reported. While Gazprom Marketing and Trading Singapore (GM&TS) will take 1.2 MMtpy of LNG from the project, which is due to start production.

SNH said the extension of the contract would permit linking Hilli Episeyo through a pipeline, or moving the floating vessel to Rio Del Rey.

Earlier this month, SNH and Perenco Cameroon reported exports of 1.2 million tons of LNG in 2019. Cameroon started processing and exporting LNG in early 2018, placing it among the few African nations involved in the sector.
