On November 18, 2024, Nachtigal Hydro Power Company (NHPC) announced the commissioning of the fourth group of the Nachtigal hydroelectric development. This milestone brings the power produced to 240 MW, marking a significant step forward in Cameroon’s energy development.
Launched in 2016, the Nachtigal hydroelectric project, located in the Central region, aims to strengthen the national energy capacity with a final installed capacity of 420 MW. The first three groups were successively delivered in May, August and September 2024, each contributing 60 MW to the Southern Interconnected Grid (RIS). The fourth group recently commissioned is part of this momentum, while the commissioning phase of the fifth group began in November. According to NHPC, the tests of the fifth group will continue throughout the month, with delivery scheduled for December 2024. The last two groups, also with a capacity of 60 MW each, are progressing satisfactorily. All seven groups are expected to be operational by early 2025, providing green and competitive energy that will cover nearly 30% of the electricity consumption of the RIS.
A titanic project 97% complete
With a progress rate of 97%, Nachtigal remains one of Cameroon’s most ambitious projects. Initially scheduled for the end of December 2024, the completion of the project was postponed to the end of January 2025 by the Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba, due to delays related to the commissioning of the second group. NHPC remains confident that the new deadlines will be met.
Challenges of energy evacuation
While hydroelectric infrastructure promises to improve Cameroon’s energy supply, a major challenge remains: the availability of electricity transmission infrastructure. Indeed, delays in the commissioning of this infrastructure could result in financial losses for the State. In accordance with the agreements signed with NHPC, the company will receive 10 billion FCFA per month upon delivery of the project, regardless of the consumption or evacuation of the energy produced.
Towards a green energy revolution
The Nachtigal hydroelectric development is part of an energy transition dynamic, offering a sustainable and competitive alternative to meet the growing demand for electricity in Cameroon. Its success will, however, depend on coordination between producers and transporters to maximize its economic and social impact.
