Gaston Eloundou Essomba calls for the optimization of the Nachtigal Hydroelectric Dam

From July 17 to 19, 2024, Gaston Eloundou Essomba went to the field to see first-hand the achievements undertaken in this sector in order to ensure optimal distribution of the energy produced by the Nachtigal hydroelectric dam.

Faced with chronic failures in the national electricity grid, the Cameroonian government has decided to move up a gear to address the recurring power cuts that are undermining the country’s economic development. With this in mind, from the Nyom 2, Nkolkoumou and Missolè transformer stations to the 90 kV Mangombè – Logbaba, 400 kV Nyom 2 – Nkolkoumou-Boumnyebel and 400 kV Edéa – Pouma – Boumnyebel transmission line corridors.

At each stage, the managers of the companies in charge of the various sites welcomed the Minister and his delegation. They gave a detailed assessment of the progress of the work, presented the situation on the ground, the challenges encountered and the progress made. Working meetings were also on the agenda with all stakeholders. The idea was to remove all obstacles likely to delay the commissioning of these crucial infrastructures.

Faced with a major energy crisis, Cameroon faces a major challenge in ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply throughout its territory. The field visit by Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba is therefore part of this dynamic of modernization and strengthening of the electricity transmission network, a sine qua non condition to enable the country to realize its full economic potential.

In addition, these field visits aimed to assess the level of completion of the electricity transmission works to allow optimal evacuation of the production from the Nachtigal hydroelectric power plant. The plant was commissioned in May 2024 and the first 120 megawatts of which have been injected into the network.

As a reminder, the transformer stations visited will play a key role in the evacuation of electricity produced by the Nachtigal dam to the industrial zones of Douala, the economic heart of Cameroon. This large-scale hydroelectric development is one of the pillars of the national strategy aimed at diversifying the country’s energy mix and reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.
