Gabonese government begins compensation to landlords

The Ministry of the Economy announced, on May 13 in Libreville, the beginning of the payment of compensation to landlords affected by the measure on free rents. Payments are made to the Treasury.

Announced by Ali Bongo on April 3, free rent finally begins the last stage of its operational phase. The Ministry of the Economy informed on May 13 in Libreville of the effectiveness of the payment of the rents.

“The Treasury services proceed to the payment of a first wave of rents which relate to the files submitted by the donors for the months of March and April 2020. The latter are contacted by the said administration to benefit from their indemnities”,  the Ministry of the Economy and announced.

To compensate for the losses of smallholders following the measure taken by the state, the government has planned aid of 2.5 billion CFA francs. The objective of this measure is to avoid evictions of tenants by landlords hosting natural or legal persons, who have lost their income due to the current health crisis. The decision relates exclusively to leases declared eligible, from March 2020 until the end of the crisis. Or a lease less than or equal to 250,000 CFA francs.

According to the Minister of Economy, 6,047 files have been received to date. “The latter are regularly treated for compensation as soon as possible. Note that the file review includes several stages including sorting to verify the compliance of the files, analysis to determine if the criteria are met and validation before payment, “Jean-Marie Ogandaga said.

The latter noted, however, the presence of incomplete records. “Interested parties are contacted by the counter to provide additional documents,” said Jean-Marie Ogandaga. In addition, the latter invited the owners concerned by the measure, and who have not yet done so, to compile their files on the site www.economie-finances.gouv.ga.
