Gabon sets May 20 as deadline for 9 digit telephone switch

The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and postal services ARCEP has set May 20 as the final deadline for the migration period to the new 9-digit numbering plan that came into effect on November 15, 2019, across the country.

Recently announced to end in May 2020, without too many details on the effective date, the closure of the migration operation from the 8-digit to 9-digit telephone numbering plan has just been set for May 20, 2020. This extension decision the cohabitation between the two numbering systems had been decided by the regulatory authority for electronic communications and posts ARCEP, to allow users to complete the complete update of their directory.

According to ARCEP, the nine-digit migration has favored the harmonization of the numbering with the recommendations of the International Union, in terms of removing the 0 on incoming international calls. Thus, since November 15, 2019, the new identifiers are defined as follows: to make a call to a Gabon Telecom fixed number, instead of the current 01, you must dial 011; to call a Libertis or Moov mobile number, instead of 06, 02 and 05, dial 066, 062 and 065 respectively. For calls to the Airtel mobile number, instead of 07 and 04, dial 077 and 0747.
