Congo unveils new Project to promote Domestic Wood Industry

In order to structure and strengthen the domestic timber sector in the Republic of Congo, the International Technical Association for Tropical Timber (ATIBT) has taken a new initiative called “Project to support the private sector domestic timber market in Congo”. This was launched by the Inspector General of Forest Economy Services, Samuel Ossebi Mbila, on 21 January in Brazzaville.

Funded by the European Union (EU) to the tune of two million euros, or three billion FCFA, over four years, the project aims to make the domestic market for Congolese wood attractive and competitive, through the structuring of the domestic wood value chain and the improvement of the use of legal and sustainable wood. “The EU’s interventions are carried out within the framework of a partnership between our institution and Congo. It is built on a promise that we share which is the forest, a renewable resource that must be managed sustainably,” said the EU’s head of cooperation, Augustin Bondo Tshiani.

Presiding over the launching ceremony of the said project, the Inspector General of Forest Economy Services assured that throughout its duration, the Congolese government will spare no effort to support ATIBT and all stakeholders involved in the domestic timber market to achieve the set objectives. ”  This support will include, among other things, the publication of implementing texts of the law concerning domestic exploitation permits to ensure the development of the country,” said the Inspector General.

Speaking, ATIBT Innovation and Strategy Director Caroline Duhesme said that the domestic timber market is the future of the Congolese industry. This market already exists and is developing on its own, but it is crucial, according to her, to guide it through sustainable practices so that it can become a driver of economic growth, job creation and forest preservation.

According to the project manager, Alain Tiotsop, the work plan will be structured around two main axes, namely the improvement of sustainable management mechanisms of the timber industry, then the strengthening of the technical and financial capacities of local actors. Particular attention will be paid to the inclusion of women in the industry and the creation of sustainable jobs, thus contributing to the socio-economic development of Congo while preserving its forest heritage.

Let us recall that the forestry sector in the Republic of Congo plays an essential role in the national economy, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises and artisans whose supply represents nearly 15% of the volumes of logs produced by forest concessionaires.

However, much of the logging and processing of wood is done informally and illegally. This compromises the sustainability of forest resources, deprives the State of revenue and hinders the professionalization of the sector.
