Chad’s Technical and financial partners mobilized against Coronavirus

The Minister of Economy and Development Planning, Issa Doubragne has  exchanged with some representatives of the agencies of the United Nations system in Chad as well as heads of banking institutions. Discussions focused on the contribution of technical and financial partners to strengthen the fight against Covid-19.

Following the call of the Head of State, Idriss Deby Itno, the various partners of Chad are mobilizing to support the government in the fight against the Coronavirus. The Minister of Economy and Development Planning, Issa Doubragne, met with the various partners in order to find alternatives in various sectors, particularly social, security, health, etc. Many partners have given their agreement to support the government during this circumstance.

The World Bank, one of the country’s main financial partners, has proposed four components for this exceptional circumstance. It offers support in the health sector and decides to finance 68% of the envelope.

According to the resident Representative of the World Bank group, Francois Nagadogo, this pandemic will certainly impact the national and international economy. Arrangements are being made to find workarounds.

The United Nations has hailed the swift action taken by the Chadian government, even before the confirmation of the first case of Coronavirus. Under the leadership of WHO, UN agencies had already helped support the contingency plan for the Covid-19 pandemic with more than CFAF 30 billion. “We have started to discuss with the Minister of Planning on how we can work on the other challenges,” the resident Representative of the United Nations system in Chad, Violetta Kakyoma said. According to her, it is a health crisis, but one that has many other impacts, for example on food security. At the end of these exchanges which aim to set up a dynamic to thwart the pandemic of Covid-19, the boss of the Economy Issa Doubragne stressed that 200 billion will be readjusted in the national budget of Chad. A forecast of food aid for vulnerable people is envisaged during this period. “The people will have answers to resolve these different difficulties,” he said.
