Chad to host sugar factory following the signing of MoU

Chad and the company SOMDIAA signed this Thursday, December 24, 2020 a memorandum of understanding for the realization of a large sugar project in Barh Sara.

The SOMDIAA group, specializing in the agro-food industry, is the promoter of this project to build an ambitious sugar complex with a capacity of over 173,000 tonnes of sugar per year. This factory will extend over a cultivable area of 16,000 ha of sugar cane from the Barh Sara River.

The completion of this major sugar project will provide Chad with the largest sugar production plant in Africa. “In the first place, its vocation is to participate in the growing satisfaction of the national demand for sugar and thus to allow Chad to be self-sufficient in terms of sugar production”, affirms the representative of the SOMDIAA group, Vincent Bouckaret.

The demand for sugar, a staple food, is estimated in Chad at around 130,000 tonnes per year. This demand is partly supplied by the Chad Sugar Company (CST), a subsidiary of the SOMDIAA group, which produces nearly 40,000 tonnes per year, a volume insufficient to supply the entire Chadian market. The rest must be imported.

In addition, this project will help develop the national agri-food sector, resulting in job creation, skills development and the development of a sustainable industrial fabric around the site.
