After eleven days of screenings and glamorous red carpet moments, the 76th Cannes Film Festival concluded with a spectacular closing ceremony. Kicked off on May 16th by Chiara Mastroianni, who delivered a touching speech alongside her mother Catherine Deneuve, and featuring the eagerly anticipated out-of-competition screening of Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, this year’s Cannes edition came to an end, leaving the outcome uncertain until the final moments.

Which films in competition impressed Ruben Östlund and his jury? Which masterpiece would follow last year’s Palme d’Or winner, Sans Filtre? Let’s take a look back at the closing ceremony and the announcement of the winners. The standout actors of the 76th edition are…

Starting with the Palme d’Or for Best Short Film, awarded to 27 by Flóra Ana Buda, Anaïs Demoustier, the president of the Camera d’Or Jury, takes the stage to honor the Best First Feature Film of this edition. And it is The Butterfly Tree by An Pham Thien from Vietnam that receives the Camera d’Or.

Next, Ruben Östlund’s jury enters the Palais des Festivals. Actor Denis Menochet rises to present the Best Actor award to Koji Yakusho, the leading man of Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days. Then, with great emotion and surprise, Merve Dizdar from Turkey accepts the Best Actress award for Dry Herbs.

The Prix de la mise en scène (Best Director) goes to French filmmaker Tran Anh Hung for The Passion of Dodin Bouffant, a film that reunites Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel on the big screen.

Palme d’Or for a French director

Almost 30 years after his Palme d’Or for Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino takes the stage for a surprise tribute to Roger Corman, the cult director of The Raven, who discovered Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and James Cameron. The audience gives him a sublime standing ovation.

Following this, British director Jonathan Glazer is honored with the Grand Prix for The Zone of Interest. Then, the legendary Jane Fonda makes her entrance on stage for the highly anticipated Palme d’Or announcement. The award goes to Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall, making it the eleventh time a French film has received the Palme d’Or.
