Government and experts to outline a rural development strategy in Cameroon

A reflection between experts in the Agricultural sector is underway since September 9, 2020. The meeting is organized in Yaoundé by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Cameroon, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER), has been organizing since September 9, 2020, a reflection between rural development experts in Yaoundé.

The forum is aimed at “adopting the rural sector development strategy document coupled with its National Agricultural Investment Plan for the period 2020-2030.” This document should serve as a reference framework for the interventions of actors in the sector over the next ten years.

Gabriel Mbairobe, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, explains that: “with a view to the emergence of 2035, there was a first phase which was supported by the strategy document for growth and employment, the development of the rural sector, the national agricultural investment plan.”

“This phase has come to an end. We are therefore preparing the second phase which will be underpinned by the national development strategy document. The rural sector, which is an important sector of our economy, should therefore join not only this document but also the international commitments made by the State ” the Minister added.

Thus, to support the development of the rural sector, our colleague affirms that four levers must be activated, according to the new strategy currently being validated: The development of sectors, that of infrastructure through the opening up of agricultural basins, improvement the business framework in agriculture to attract the private sector and also, the promotion of food security through the organization of small producers and farmers’ organizations.

For Tobie Ondoa Manga, Coordinator of the Technical Secretariat of the rural sector who presented this strategy to the various technical and financial partners: “We must integrate agriculture into the education system because it is one of our strengths and therefore it is necessary to be able to give capacities to the actors of the field… It is necessary to equip them with the management of the farms. We also need to improve the production environment.”
