Memve’ele Dam to be fully operational by June 2021

The Director General of Electricity Development Corporation (EDC), Théodore Nsangou, recently visited the Memve’ele hydroelectric dam site in the southern region. The day after this visit, the EDC CEO said on Cameroonian public radio that the Memve’ele hydroelectric dam could be fully operational “around June 2021.”

“EDC received the formal mission, on May 4 by presidential decree, to complete and operate this work in place of the coordination unit of the Memve’ele hydroelectric development project – by Dieudonné Bisso – which followed the project all along but which experienced significant delays ”.

The construction of the structure, on Sino-Cameroonian funds, has been completed since June 2017 but the expected energy (211 MW) of the production plant is not yet available at the Nkolkoumou substation in Yaoundé, to be injected into the South interconnected network (RIS). “Currently, around 60 MW are available and EDC intends to quickly increase this power to 80 MW,” we learnt.

For EDC’s CEO, “this is guaranteed power all year round. The 211 MW of installed capacity – once the dam is fully operational – will be available 6 to 7 months a year, because of the flow of the river and taking into account the hydrological studies carried out on the Ntem river “.
