Kribi to host oil refinery

This project is included in the National Development Strategy Document 2020-2030, and should serve the countries of the Central Africa sub-region.

The State of Cameroon plans to build a second refinery at Kribi in the southern region, after the only one in the country, the Société Nationale de Raffinage (SONARA), based in Limbé in the southwest. This project is contained in the National Development Strategy Document 2020-2030, informs our colleagues from Business in Cameroon.

The infrastructure should be able to serve the countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa (CEMAC), in this case the Central African Republic, Congo, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and Chad. Its production capacity is estimated at 5 million tonnes / year, and its construction should be financed on the basis of a public-private partnership, we learn.

“The idea of building a refinery in Kribi stems from the fact that this part of southern Cameroon is already home to a gas platform and the LNG carrier Hilli Episeyo, converted into a floating natural gas liquefaction unit,” indicate our colleagues.

It should be noted that Cameroon currently has only one refinery, SONARA, which suffered an arson on May 31, 2019, and remains awaiting rehabilitation.
