Gabon considering getting Electricity from Equatorial Guinea

In Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), where he took part in the African Energy Summit, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema spoke with the Deputy Prime Minister of Equatorial Guinea about his country’s purchase of electricity from Malabo. The purchase-sale contract signed between the two countries in July 2023 could come to fruition in the near future.

From January 27 to 28, the transitional president took part in the African Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. On the sidelines of this meeting, the main objective of which is to facilitate access to electricity for 300 million individuals by 2030 thanks to the support of the World Bank Group and the African Development Bank, Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema spoke with Gaudencio Mahoba Messu, the Deputy Prime Minister of Equatorial Guinea, on Libreville’s desire to purchase electricity from Malabo. It must be said that Gabon is currently facing significant shortfalls in terms of electricity supply. The country hopes to find solutions with its neighbor.

After several years of negotiations, the two countries signed, on July 7, 2023 in Brazzaville (Republic of Congo), a contract for the purchase and sale of electrical energy between the Sociedad de Electricidad de Guinea Ecuatorial (SEGESA) and the SEEG. The member of the Equatorial Guinean government believes that things could accelerate in the near future. ” With Gabon, we signed a partnership on the sale of electrical energy at the level of the common borders. The Gabonese president will see with his peer from Equatorial Guinea how to implement this as soon as possible ,” Gaudencio Mahoba Messu told the press at the end of his meeting with Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema in the Tanzanian capital.

Northern Gabon supplied as a priority

The Gabon-Equatorial Guinea cross-border electrification will consist in its first phase of supplying the town of Bitam (Gabon) from the Ebebiyin substation (Equatorial Guinea) through the construction of a 20 kV medium voltage line and associated equipment, as well as a low voltage network in the villages located on the line route. Ultimately, the localities of Oyem and Médouneu will also be supplied from Mongomo, Acurenam and Ebebiyin in Equatorial Guinea. This agreement aims to accelerate the implementation of the sub-regional integration project through a strategic axis: the interconnection of electricity networks.

Other solutions with Africa 50

On the sidelines of this summit, the president of the Gabonese transition also met on January 28 with Alain Ebobisse, the CEO of Africa 50. Their meeting focused on Gabon’s priority projects and those of the investment platform created by African governments and the AfDB to fill the infrastructure financing gap on the continent. The energy and transport sectors were mainly discussed by the two men.

The Head of State stressed the importance of electricity production and transport infrastructure, calling for rapid implementation in collaboration with the Gabonese government, reports the Presidential Communication.
