Gabon and Equatorial Guinea finetune Energy Cooperation

Gabon and Equatorial Guinea are taking a new step in their energy cooperation. On March 20 , 2025, in Malabo, the two countries signed an electricity grid operating agreement, thus solidifying their commitment to strengthening subregional energy interconnection. This agreement, which follows the official commissioning of the infrastructure on February 22, 2025, aims to provide a stable electricity supply to the Gabonese cities of Oyem, Medouneu, and Mitzic.

The meeting between Gabon’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Dr. Séraphin Akure Davain, and his Equatorial Guinean counterpart, Gervasio Engonga Mba, in Malabo on March 20th, finalized the operational arrangements for the operation of the interconnected networks. The signing of the agreement by the Managing Directors of SEEG (Gabon Energy and Water Company) and SEGESA (Equatorial Guinea Electricity Company) formalizes the commitments of both parties in energy management and distribution.

Through this interconnection, 10 MW of hydroelectric power will be imported from Equatorial Guinea to meet the growing energy needs of northern Gabon. This initiative represents a concrete response to the electrification challenges of this region, while promoting better exploitation of the energy resources available in the sub-region.

Beyond the immediate benefits for local populations and businesses, this agreement is part of a broader dynamic of energy integration in Central Africa. It paves the way for other partnerships in energy exchanges and the development of shared infrastructure.

The ministers of the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening energy cooperation and exploring new development opportunities in this strategic sector. This interconnection could thus serve as a model for other similar initiatives within the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC), aimed at ensuring better security of electricity supply and promoting a sub-regional energy market.
