FEICOM and GIZ seal deal to tackle climate change

The event took place on December 9, 2020, at the headquarters of the Special Fund for Equipment and Inter-municipal Intervention in Yaoundé. In order to tie in with the local development project which took a decisive turn with the elections of regional councilors on December 6, the Special Fund for Equipment and Inter-municipal Intervention (FEICOM) signed a partnership agreement with the German company GIZ. The signing of the agreement took place on December 9, 2020 in Yaoundé.

This convention covers the implementation of the Covenant of Mayors for Sub-Saharan Africa (COMSSA). It itself enables cities in this part of the continent to address the interrelated challenges of climate change and access to sustainable energy.

For this collaboration, which is intended to be a short and medium-term, article 3 which deals with the areas of partnership speaks of: “strengthening the capacities of municipal magistrates, municipal staff and FEICOM on issues related to climate change; the identification with the beneficiaries of projects relating to the construction of mini-electricity grids, public lighting, integrated waste management, and access to drinking water.

Setting up projects likely to be supported by GIZ within the framework of COMSSA; mobilization of funding for the implementation of local projects; support for decentralized local authorities and FEICOM in accessing climate finance on the basis of files that meet donor requirements; the joint organization of an ’Energy and Climate Finance Forum for Local Governments’ etc. ’, it reads.

For Philippe Camille Akoa, Director General of FEICOM, “training mayors on all issues relating to climate change is an urgent matter today. This will allow for sustainable development.”
