Digital culture in Cameroon: “17.8% of households use the internet” – MINPOSTEL

The information was revealed by Post and Telecommunications Minister Minette Libom Li Likeng during a webinar for digital sector actors on the continent on August 6, 2020. During the webinar of the actors of the digital sector on the continent in which the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications (MINPOSTEL), Minette Libom Li Likeng, took part, on August 6, 2020, the latter stressed that the digital culture still has some way in Cameroon .

According to the Minister: “there is still the fear of getting started, not only for fear of the new, but also because of the cybercrime which is quite present in this sector. So much so that to date, only 17.8% of households in Cameroon use the internet, well below the African and world average.

However, Minette Libom Li Likeng presented the progress that Cameroon has made so far in this area.

To date, the Minister indicated, “20,000 km of optical fiber have been laid across the country, with urban loops in the 58 departments. There are also four submarine cables installed to facilitate Internet access and all related services. Achievements made thanks to a partnership with the Chinese firm Huawei Technologies.

Libom Li Likeng also referred to the digital digital development strategic plan, a real compass for government action in this area. The drop in Internet communications rates by around 50% between 2018 and 2019, support for start-ups through various projects, the existence of Datacenters were also mentioned. Just like the reduction of the digital bill through various training modules for young people, ”notes the newspaper.

The webinar of August 6 was entitled: “Digital transformation of States: the digital catalyst for growth and progress in Africa.”
