Dick Wolf’s Insights on Crafting a Thriving Crime Drama Series

The American TV Legend Discusses Inspirations and the Key to Law Enforcement Success

Renowned producer Dick Wolf, the creative force behind popular crime dramas like “Law & Order,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and “FBI,” sheds light on his creative process, sources of inspiration, and the essential ingredients for a successful crime series. As he graces the Monte Carlo Television Festival for the 21st time, Wolf shares his invaluable advice and reflections.

Dick Wolf, your body of work consists of numerous written and produced series, with a clear inclination towards crime dramas. Why is that?

Dick Wolf: Because life and death are the most significant aspects of any dramatic series.

What were the influences shaping your cinematic vision?

Dick Wolf: There’s cinema, of course, but also television. The earliest film I remember is titled “Dragnet,” released in 1952.

After this long and successful career, what continues to inspire you?

Dick Wolf: World peace. I’m neither disappointed nor dissatisfied. I hope things keep progressing the way they do.

Tell us a bit about the behind-the-scenes of your latest series, “FBI”…

Dick Wolf: There was a lot of stress due to changes in the production team. It wasn’t easy to see things clearly. Even before the premiere, we didn’t know who the writer would be because there were two of them…

Crime dramas haven’t fully flourished in Africa yet. The existing ones don’t enjoy the same level of success as the ones you produce. Do you have any advice for African screenwriters, directors, and producers who dream of achieving global success with crime series?

Dick Wolf: They should focus on evoking emotion and conflict.

Does it still have an impact on you to see your name on the screen during the credits of the series you produce?

Dick Wolf: It’s always gratifying to see your name on screen in the credits. But after approximately 2000 episodes, I can’t say I’m as moved as I was in the early days.

With an illustrious career spanning countless series, Dick Wolf remains dedicated to the exploration of life and death within dramatic narratives. His passion for storytelling is rooted in the impact these themes have on audiences. Offering a glimpse into the backstage of his latest creation, “FBI,” Wolf acknowledges the challenges faced during production and emphasizes the importance of emotional engagement and conflict for aspiring African screenwriters, directors, and producers seeking international recognition. As his name continues to appear in the credits, Wolf appreciates the acknowledgment but notes that the initial excitement has evolved after two decades of remarkable television success.
