The statistics have been revealed by the Maritime Delivery Agency taken up by Alphaliner, the world reference in online navigation. In its traditional newsletter, Alphaliner (currently considered the global benchmark for online browsing) assesses the economic impact of coronavirus in the logistics sector. Globally, Alphaliner notes that between December 2019 and April 2020, the number of TEUs at a standstill approaches 3 million. In Cameroon, the Maritime Benefits Agency (APM) quoted in the newsletter estimates losses of coronavirus in the field at 10%.
“In general, the purchase of protective equipment, namely gloves, masks, thermo flash, alcoholic solutions has a cost. Especially for companies with more than 200 employees,”we can read. This underperformance can also be explained by the closure of the borders, which has an impact on activities in the logistics sector.
To measure the impact of this crisis, reports the newsletter, you have to go to the Autonomous Port of Kribi PAK . Since the discovery of the first positive case on the port platform, and the measures taken by the Cameroonian government, performance has declined. Between January and March 2020, for example, the number of ships’ calls decreased by more than 50%. The calls dropped from 26 ships in January to 15 in March. This is the first time since its entry into service that the port has shown such poor performance. In the first month of its fiscal year, the PAK registered 15 ships, but overall, the port platform fluctuated between 21 and 32, ending with 326 calls at the port of Mboro and offshore terminals.
