Chemical labeling of petroleum products earns Cameroon $66 million annually since 2012

The Hydrocarbons, analyzes and controls Unit (Hydrac) has taken stock of the fallout from the chemical marking of petroleum products, implemented in Cameroon since 2012.

“We can cite the reduction of fraud from 36% to less than 2% and the increase in state tax gains in this sector, which is around 40 billion FCFA [65.9 million $, Editor’s note] per year. There is also the preservation of vehicle engines and other production tools, as well as the reduction of environmental pollution and the preservation of the health of populations, ” the Director General, David Ekoume revealed in a recent interview published by the magazine. SNH Infos.

The marking of petroleum products, explains Mr. Ekoume, consists of the introduction of minute quantities of markers or tracers made from nanoparticles in petroleum products, according to their taxation and their destination. Unannounced and repetitive checks are then organized in the field using appropriate equipment, making it possible to almost instantly detect all forms of fraud.

Hydrac has been engaged in the control of the quality and quantities of petroleum products since its creation in 1982. As the means of control implemented to date, the company lists, among other things: quality control on imports and quantities of petroleum products, control of the quantities and quality of products in service stations on behalf of marketers, research into pollution in marketed petroleum products, loss audits on behalf of marketers, etc.
