Chad suffers economic shocks from Covid 19 pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic that has broken out in Chad is affecting the economy. All areas of life are affected. The perverse effects of the Covid-19 are felt today on the basket of the housewife. The health crisis that has shaken the whole world since the end of 2019 has had invaluable social and economic consequences in Chad, according to experts. No socio-economic strata have been spared. Private and public companies in all sectors have seen their sales drop dramatically.

Economically, the pandemic has caused the price of a barrel of oil to fall sharply on the international market. This put producers like Chad in trouble with public finances. Besides the petroleum sector, the hotel sector also took a real blow. He lost hundreds of millions. The shortfall is huge for the national economy. These losses, estimated at hundreds of millions, were the consequences of measures taken by the Government to curb the spread of the pandemic.

In the building and public works sector, the situation is also bleak. All construction sites are stopped. General laborers and other workers are forced into unemployment. To this must be added the air and road transport sector, which has also taken a heavy blow. Ditto for trade, tourism, catering and education.

Despite the dreaded disaster, the country’s authorities have worked tirelessly to absorb the shock anyway. It is true that the measures taken have far-reaching effects on the labor market and on the living conditions of households, but the results are worth the effort.

The closing of the markets had created a stir among certain categories of the population in this case, the most vulnerable. These only ensure their daily subsistence through the informal sector. Suddenly, the closing of shops looks like a condemnation to a slow death.

Restricting movement and closing businesses has been a nightmare for many people who fight daily to earn their living. Their situation was very alarming despite the accompanying measures recommended by the government. Fortunately, these measures have been relaxed by the new national health crisis management committee, set up by the President of the Republic to replace the watch unit.

Despite the efforts made by the public authorities, it would be desirable for the government to provide the necessary financial support to these private and state-owned enterprises which have suffered the aftermath of the effects of this coronavirus pandemic.
