The African Regional Communications Organization is experiencing a real revolution. The institution founded in 1992 has in fact just appointed Cameroon at the head of its board of directors. A double historic event since it is a first, not only for the country of indomitable lions, but also and above all, for that of a woman at the head of this Board of Directors.
Judith Yah Sunday will thus preside over the destiny of the institution for a year and will be assisted by Siaka Coulibaly, the representative of Mali.
This is an election which takes place in a context where RASCOM is engaged in a recovery movement, challenged by the rapid arrival of digitalization, a major tool for the modernization of society. At the head of this Council, the current General Director of Camtel will have to support Timothy Ashong, the General Director of Rascom, (also confirmed during these meetings for a 5-year mandate) in achieving the missions assigned to him: “we We are resolutely committed, alongside the Vice-President and the General Manager, to working for the influence of Rascom and the repetition of its missions,” indicated the new Board Chairperson.
Concretely, it will be a question of developing strategies aimed at providing large-scale telecommunications infrastructure at lower cost to rural areas of the continent using appropriate technology, improving and/or developing long distance communications in each country; establish direct lines between all African countries without exception and provide facilities for radio and television broadcasts in each country and allow the exchange of radio and television programs between African countries, etc.
Beyond a personal consecration, this election is a victory for Cameroon, which thus sees its leadership reinforced in the strategic telecommunications sector. “I would like to thank all the member countries of RASCOM having supported Cameroon’s candidacy for the presidency of the Board of Directors of the organization ,” said Judith Yah Sunday, who undoubtedly benefits from the credits recorded in the quality of management executed within the Camtel company.
Rascom is a multilateral organization made up of 45 African countries which aims to build and operate a satellite system in Earth orbit in order to provide point-to-multipoint telecommunications services across the continent.
