Cameroon’s Mobile Telecom operators lose 118 billion in two years

These data relate to the companies Orange Cameroun, VIETTEL Cameroun and MTN Cameroun, united within the Association of Operators Concessionaires of Mobile Telephony in Cameroon. The mobile telephone companies Orange Cameroon, VIETTEL Cameroon (NEXTTEL) and MTN Cameroon, joined on Monday December 14, 2020 the Inter-employer Group of Cameroon (GICAM), under the banner of the Association of Concessional Operators of Mobile Telephony in Cameroon (AOCTM).

During a ceremony dedicated to the cause, the president of the AOCTM, Frédéric Debord, also managing director of Orange Cameroon, suggested that mobile telephone operators are suffering the full brunt of the economic situation, and recorded on the last two years, financial losses amounted to 118 billion FCFA.

“This crisis is resulting in huge financial losses for all players in the ICT sector. By way of example, the members of our Association alone lost 96 billion CFA in 2018 and more than 22 billion in 2019. However, we have continued to invest, with more than 58 billion in 2019. However, this situation cannot last ”, he revealed, in comments published by the daily Le Jour on Tuesday, December 15, 2020. However, Frédéric Debord, who is also Secretary-General of the AOCTM, did not give more details on the origin of these losses.

He also explained the reasons for this association’s membership in GICAM. “Membership in this illustrious organization will allow the association to contribute to better promotion of the role of the mobile telephone sector in Cameroon and to be part of a strong, structured network, a benchmark player for the promotion and defense of companies, ”he says.

The AOCTM was born in 2019, out of a need for concessionary telephone operators to unite in order to jointly address the issues that are common to them in compliance with the competition law in force.
