Cameroon imports 165 cows from France to improve milk production

Cameroon has imported 165 cows from France, to increase its local milk production. These animals landed in Garoua, in the North region, on October 3, 2020. The Cameroonian government bought them, thanks to the Livestock Development Project (PRODEL), “financed by the World Bank”

The country has a large deficit in milk production of around 120,000 tonnes per year, despite local production which has increased by 7% since 2014, to stand at nearly 275,000 tonnes in 2019 Thus, Dr Abouame, coordinator of PRODEL, confides that: “the government is taking very high performance animals to resolve this deficit”.

The three northern regions which has an almost unbeatable know-how in breeding, rolled out the red carpet to 165 pregnant heifers of Montbéliarde breed, whose production is estimated, according to specialists at 40 liters of milk per day

These animals were transported to “Lougguerre station by Guider, in the Mayo-Louti division, where three stables with a capacity of 60 animals await them. This is where they will spend their quarantine, ” Dr Bessong Ojong, Technical advisor No. 2 at the Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA) said.

A strict protocol has been defined for their reception, their acclimatization for two to three months and their adaptation to the new ecosystem. MINEPIA, Dr Taïga, also called on operators in the sector to follow in the government’s footsteps by in turn importing dairy cows.

According to Guy Charbonnier, one of the specialists who transported the animals from France, “the arrival of the animals coincided with the rain in Garoua. This saved the heat stress to the animals which will need a lot of water. Now you have to be careful about eating, sleeping, watching.
