Banga Kayo Gas Plant Inaugurated

On a working visit to the departments of Pointe-Noire and Kouilou, the President of the Republic, Denis Sassou N’Guesso, inaugurated on November 17, the gas processing plant associated with the Banga-Kayo field, in Tchamba Nzassi sub division

Implemented by the Chinese company Wing Wah Exploration and Production SAU, in partnership with the National Petroleum Company of Congo (SNPC), the associated gas processing plant is a complete system comprising, among other things, processing, compression, separation, liquefaction, storage, and logistics units, as well as all the necessary infrastructure to transform the gas into energy and industrial products. The project plans to produce dry gas, propane, butane, and a significant volume of LNG for the national and international markets.

Li Jin Qiang, Vice President of Wing Wah E&P Petroleum SAU, noted that the inauguration of this plant is the result of the Congolese Head of State’s vision and leadership, which paved the way, set the ambition, and established the framework that made this major achievement for the country possible. “To give an idea of the scale, at full capacity, we will process 5 million cubic meters of associated gas per day, producing over 219,000 tons of propane, 151,000 tons of butane, 88,000 tons of LNG, and 250,000 tons of LNG, as well as a significant quantity of dry gas. This is a major leap forward for the Republic of Congo. This result is the fruit of a well-managed program, implemented in three phases: the first in 2024, the second in 2025, and the third in 2026 ,” he added.

According to Li Jin Qiang, each step increases capacity, improves production quality, and strengthens benefits for the country. A subsidiary of the Chinese group Southernpec, Wing Wah aims to reach 500,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030. He also welcomed the reforms undertaken by the government since 2021, which have created a climate of trust and a modern framework enabling operators to improve their performance. “Thanks to this impetus, Wing Wah has been able to transform its working methods and increase its production in record time from 8,000 barrels in 2021 to 58,000 barrels today ,” he said.

According to the Vice President of Wing Wah, it is on this positive dynamic, based on a shared ambition, that the launch of this vast integrated project, scheduled for deployment in December 2025, is now based. “What we are inaugurating today is just one pillar of this integrated project. This future project aims to link the three permits through a complete network of infrastructure, pipelines, oil pipeline, gas pipeline, an oil and gas processing center, an oil and gas transfer center, new industrial roads, several kilometers of rehabilitated tracks and crossing structures to guarantee access in all seasons ,” he continued.

Indeed, this program includes the drilling of numerous wells and the construction of infrastructure, which alone will contribute approximately 200,000 barrels of oil equivalent to national production, creating over 7,000 direct and indirect jobs. It represents a major economic driver, an incentive for young people, and an opportunity for local businesses.  “This project would never have seen the light of day without an essential partner, SNPC. I would like to publicly commend the sincerity of our partnership, the quality of their support, and their unwavering commitment at every stage. SNPC is a key player in our success ,” Li Jin Qiang affirmed.

The Minister of Hydrocarbons, Bruno Jean Richard Itoua, praised the scale of the investments made by Wing Wah, particularly its leader, combined with the robustness of its technical approach, which has undoubtedly enabled it to contribute to writing a new chapter in the nation’s energy history. This contributes to strengthening the gas value chain, reducing flaring, creating skilled jobs, and establishing a solid and sustainable industrial base. “This investment, while significant, is only one aspect of Wing Wah’s growing commitment to our country… This project, which is set to sustainably shape the future of several oil permits operated by Wing Wah, notably Banga-Kayo, involves drilling more than 1,400 wells over 20 years and investments of approximately US$23 billion.” “This US$23 billion, in addition to the US$4 billion of the initial project, brings the company’s total future investment to approximately US$27 billion .”
