DRC: Launch of the “10KM Brazza,” a Race Blending Sport, Culture, and Civic Engagement

On August 17, Brazzaville will come alive with the rhythm of a unique and meaningful event. The inaugural edition of the “10KM Brazza” is a ten-kilometer road race open to all, promising far more than a mere athletic challenge. It aims to bring together the city’s residents in a moment of fellowship, personal achievement, and celebration of the Congolese capital’s rich heritage.

Designed as an inclusive gathering, the 10KM Brazza welcomes seasoned athletes and casual participants alike—runners, walkers, and families—inviting everyone to take to the city’s streets at their own pace in a spirit of unity and diversity. Through this initiative, the organizers hope to inspire residents to adopt a more active lifestyle while rediscovering their city from a fresh perspective, along a route that highlights its most iconic landmarks.

The race will set off at 8:00 a.m. from the steps of City Hall, at the foot of the statue of Abbé Fulbert Youlou. From there, participants will follow a carefully designed course that passes through some of Brazzaville’s most symbolic sites: the Corniche, the Institut Français du Congo, the Palais des Congrès, the École Nationale d’Administration et de Magistrature (ENAM), before culminating at the famed Nabemba Tower—the final highlight of this urban loop.

Along the way, various activities will animate the course, energizing participants and creating a festive, intergenerational celebration. Whether running or walking, and regardless of experience level, every participant will find a place and pace that suits them in this collective experience.

For Derrick Kadza, CEO of Maison Colibri, the organizing body behind the event, the 10KM Brazza carries a mission that goes well beyond physical performance. “It is time to be the solution. This walk is an opportunity to get moving, to engage, and to show that Congolese and African youth have a leading role to play in transforming our society,” he affirms.

The 10KM Brazza is part of a broader set of initiatives led by Maison Colibri, a civic think tank dedicated to empowering and mobilizing African youth. Inspired by the legend of the hummingbird—a small bird that, when faced with a great fire, carries drops of water to do its part—the organization promotes the belief that every individual can contribute to change, in their own way. Its core values are humility, boldness, empathy, creativity, commitment, and faith in the transformative potential of youth.

With this first edition, Maison Colibri intends to establish the 10KM Brazza as an annual fixture—an event that is at once athletic, cultural, and civic-minded. It is a celebration of energy, inspiration, and renewal, one that will set Brazzaville’s heart beating as one.
