16.4 billion FCFA invested in socio-economic infrastructure around the Cross River bridge

An ambitious socioeconomic development project is underway in Cameroon’s Southwest region, with the construction of essential infrastructure designed to improve the living conditions of the communities living along the Cross River Bridge. European Union funding of 16.4 billion CFA francs is intended to support this initiative, which promises a significant transformation in the region.

The construction of the Cross River Bridge, on the border between Cameroon and Nigeria, goes hand in hand with major socio-economic projects for local communities. A total budget of 16.4 billion CFA francs, financed by the European Union, will enable the construction of several infrastructure projects aimed at improving the quality of life of local residents. The contract for the work has already been signed, and the necessary steps are underway to release the funds and mobilize the Control Mission, which ensures the proper management of the projects.

Upcoming projects include the construction of a 700 m² roundabout in Bachuo Akakbe, a strategic intersection between the Kumba-Mamfe and Bamenda-Mamfe roads, which will facilitate traffic flow. This roundabout will also include 200 m² of parking space. In Ekok, several key infrastructure projects will be completed: the paving of 5 km of roads, the rehabilitation of the health center, and schools, with improvements such as fencing and latrines.

Housing will also be central to the project, with the construction of three two-story buildings to house staff at the Mfum border checkpoint. In addition, a bus station and market sheds will be built in Ekok to boost the local economy. The provision of street lighting and the development of drinking water supply systems in Ekok will complete this series of infrastructure, aimed at improving the daily lives of local populations.

This project is part of a sustainable development approach, combining infrastructure modernization with environmental preservation. The objective is clear: to promote economic prosperity while ensuring a better future for the populations living along the bridge. These initiatives will not only help strengthen connectivity between Cameroon and its neighbors, but also stimulate local economic activity by improving access to essential services such as health, education, and drinking water.

The project’s initial results are promising, and authorities are optimistic about its long-term impact. The European Union, through its financial support, demonstrates its commitment to fostering the development of underdeveloped regions in Cameroon, and more broadly in Africa.

With this project, the construction of the Cross River Bridge is establishing itself as a true driver of socio-economic transformation for the Southwest region. The massive infrastructure investments promise to significantly improve the living conditions of local residents and open up new perspectives for harmonious and sustainable development.
