The estimate has been released by the West and North West branches of the Cameroon Poultry Interprofession Association.
The Cameroon Poultry Interprofession (IPAVIC) is suffering the full brunt of the harmful consequences of Coronavirus disease. According to estimates published by this group, the West and North-West basins have recorded 7 billion FCFA in losses since the implementation of the 13 government measures to fight the pandemic. IPAVIC West and North West admit that they did not take into account breeders who were not members of this group during the study carried out over a period of one month.
Data officialized by the Cameroon Poultry Interprofession, in partnership with MINEPIA, MINEPAT and MINEFOP, maintain that over a period of one month, the hatcherers lost a billion and almost 9 million FCFA. “The hatchers stopped importing because of the stopping of air traffic, the restriction of movements and the drastic fall in demand for chicks.”
According to Léopold Kamga, President of IPAVIC West and North West , whose comments are reported in the newspaper’s columns, “the losses recorded by egg importers are also linked to the obligation to choke chicks imposed by the consequent restrictions of the Covid-19 crisis. “
During the month of evaluation, the price of 45-day chicken stood between 1500 FCFA to 2300 FCFA on average. Based on previous estimates, IPAVIC claims that 2 million 748 thousand chickens are sold each month. “In view of this fact, we are entitled to indicate that the losses or the shortfall during this first month of restriction are estimated at 2 billion and 199 million FCFA,” said Leopold Kamga.
Another sector impacted, “the breeders of laying eggs for consumption record losses estimated at 843 million 750 thousand FCFA during the month of restrictions linked to the fight against Covid-19. Substantial losses from the drop in the price of the egg cell which fell from 1,500 to 1,200 FCFA on average during the first month of restrictions. “
The Cameroon Poultry Interprofession Association also adds “the losses recorded among importers of ” premixes ” and concentrates, feeders, distributors of veterinary products, transporters and distributors of poultry products which, according to the West and North basin West of IPAVIC, could be estimated at least three billion FCFA.”
