CAMTEL announces plans to create bottling line

As part of its 2023-2030 Five-Year Priority Investment Plan, the public company issued a call for international expressions of interest on April 30, 2025. The objective is to prequalify companies for the construction of ultrafiltration and bottling lines for water produced by Camwater in Cameroon’s 10 regions.

Over the past three years, Camwater, under the leadership of Dr. Blaise Moussa, has steadily intensified its efforts in the field. Its top priority is to continuously supply populations and make quality water available to consumers, meeting international standards. In its constant pursuit of transformation and innovation, Camwater intends to leverage its existing drinking water production capacity.

According to the institution, far from being a substitute, ” bottled water, a new product to be launched, will be considered as an accessory, but also a complement…” . To carry out this life-saving project, Camwater plans to create ultrafiltration, equilibrium mineralization and bottling units in the 10 regions of the country. Moreover, once the successful bidders are known, a pilot phase will be launched in the main cities of the national territory, namely Yaoundé, Douala, Bafoussam, Limbe and Maroua.

In light of the rapidly growing population, Camwater remains committed to fulfilling its social mission. In accordance with Decree No. 2018/144 of February 20, 2018, and the various decisions of the Board of Directors, this manager of the production and marketing of drinking water in Cameroon is authorized to carry out direct and related activities. Among these, and outside of traditional financing, are the creation of subsidiaries with social purpose missions and the implementation of complex projects through alternative sources such as public-private partnerships or buyer credits.

Bottled water, price/quality and additional revenue for Camwater

While drinking water distributed through taps remains Camwater’s main product, the implementation of the Camwater water bottling project offers several advantages. By offering a range of new products to consumers, this initiative will strengthen access to drinking water for the population, beyond the traditional tap.

Furthermore, exploring new revenue niches will help support the public company’s finances. In a fairly competitive market driven by well-known water brands, ensuring a better quality/price offer compared to similar products already available on the Cameroonian market is the preferred option for the Camwater project.

By strengthening its commitment to always meeting the requirements for producing the best quality products according to international standards, the marketing of bottled water will allow Camwater to not only diversify its portfolio of activities, but also to strengthen its self-financing capacity, increase its competitiveness and visibility in the water market, essential levers for promoting the quality of the water produced within public opinion.

While its internal expertise is no longer in doubt, the marketing of bottled water will effectively help reduce its dependence on network sales. This segment has a much more social connotation, hence the low profit margins most often recorded.
