95 Billion FCFA earmarked for the Modernization of the Douala Airport

The Douala International Airport is poised to welcome 2.5 million passengers annually after its renovation, compared to 1.5 million currently. An ambitious 95 billion FCFA modernization project was presented on November 12th during the 136th session of the Board of Directors of Airports of Cameroon (ADC), aiming to increase the airport’s capacity and modernize its infrastructure.

Douala International Airport, Cameroon’s primary air hub and the platform handling nearly half of the country’s air traffic, is poised for a major transformation. On November 12, 2025, a preliminary plan for the renovation of the passenger terminal was presented at the 136th session of the board of directors. This modernization program, estimated at 95 billion FCFA, aims to increase passenger capacity and bring the infrastructure up to international standards.

Located near the port of Douala, the main commercial hub of the CEMAC zone, the airport plays a strategic role in trade between Cameroon, Chad, and the Central African Republic. The project involves expanding the airport infrastructure with the construction of a new apron. The existing 20,000 m² will be completely renovated, while an additional 10,000 m² will be added, including new check-in counters.

Work is expected to begin in the second half of 2026 and be completed in June 2028. Ultimately, the airport’s annual capacity will increase from 1.5 to 2.5 million passengers, reinforcing Douala’s ambition to become a key regional hub.
